A #Romantic #Thriller Series NOT TO MISS!

Thanks so much for inviting me to be your guest today, Alisha. I’m pleased to announce the release of BAD VIBES, the third novel in my romantic thriller series: THE EDGE OF TEXAS.

This series was inspired by my many visits to the semi-tropical setting on the Texas coast, about 25 miles north of our border with Mexico. This is a popular area for spring breakers and also for older people who escape the harsh winters up north to have a second home in the sunny south. I never encountered anything sinister in my many years of sailing off this beach, but I’m a romantic suspense writer and I can’t help it if my brain takes some dark pathways in my exploration of “what-ifs”.

BLURB:
When government agent Mike “The Iceman” Burke invades her South Padre Island turf, Deputy Darla Calhoun is assigned as liaison officer to his team. Her skills as a sniper come in handy when a gang of human traffickers strikes close to home, kidnapping local women including her best friend. Darla is recovering from her husband’s suicide and trying to be a good parent to her twin sons. The ICE assignment takes her out of her misery and plunges her into a dangerous mission and a steamy affair. Mike and Darla tear up and down the Intracoastal Waterway in search of the kidnappers and the captive women while Rafael and Javier conduct their own investigation. Will they rescue the captive women or will the kidnappers slaughter them as they have done in the past? Two teams race to find the answers before it's too late.

Darla arrests a vagrant, hanging around the marina, but after he’s cleaned up, she discovers a hunky, hard-body with a smoldering gaze hidden beneath the filthy rags. He turns out to be a federal agent working undercover. He’s after a gang of human traffickers using the Intracoastal Waterway to bring sex slaves into the United States from Mexico. Rafael assigns Darla as liaison officer to work with the feds, bringing her face-to-face with the “Iceman”, Mike Burke, the undercover agent she arrested. Darla, Mike and his partner tear up and down the Intracoastal Waterway in pursuit of the human traffickers, but when two local women disappear, the search becomes personal.

The following excerpt takes place the morning after Darla has spent her first night aboard the boat with the team of feds on loan to ICE.

EXCERPT:
Mike leaned against the railing, trying to make his coffee last as long as possible while he made small talk with Darla.
The sheriff’s man was definitely all woman.
A light sleeper, he had awakened when Darla first started stirring. In the dim light of the cabin, he’d enjoyed the whole show.
He grinned down at her. It was only fair, after all. He’d stripped for her.
“Come and get it,” Freddy called. “It’s the specialty of the house.”
Mike whispered, “Tacos ala Freddy.”
Darla laughed and he felt a strange twinge...Strange for him. He had the desire to take her in his arms and kiss her...for starters. Her fresh, natural beauty was intoxicating. He thrust his hands in his pockets to keep from touching her.
“What?” she asked.
He shook his head. “Nothing.” What was he thinking? He was on assignment and it had nothing to do with jumping on the lovely little deputy. But, man! She was putting out some strong vibes.
I’m hallucinating! She almost broke my fingers off last night when she thought I might touch her. But look at her. All soft and pretty this morning.
He tried to clear the thought from his head. Casting about for a safe topic of conversation, he seized on the one thing he knew about her. “Do you sail?” he asked, knowing the answer.
“All my life. My dad always had a sailboat of some kind. He raised all of his kids to love the water.”
Mike grinned. “Good man! If I ever have kids, I hope to do the same.”
She smiled up at him. “No family?”
He shook his head. “This job is murder on relationships.”
“I can imagine. You move around a lot?”
“I’m based in Washington, DC, but my assignments take me all over the world.”
She sighed. “That sounds exciting. I’ve never been anywhere.” Her brow furrowed. “And I guess I’ll never get to go.”
“Why not?” He turned to give her his full attention.
“I have two young sons. Raising them to become good men has become my prime objective.”
Mike felt a tightness in his chest. “Good objective.”
“They’re worth it.”
He wished his mother had felt that way about him instead of dumping him on his grandfather. She left town with a musician who’d played one night at a local bar. His grandfather, a master carpenter, had given him all the basics and left him to his own devices. The upside was that he developed a trade he could fall back on. Maybe someday he would build something again.
Scholarships had earned him a degree in Political Science before he’d joined the Marine Corps. After six years in Force Recon, he’d gone into government service of another kind. His assignments had taken him to many exotic locales, but never had he worked in such close proximity to a beautiful woman. He wondered if the stirrings he was feeling would get in the way of his accomplishing his objectives.
